Active Listening

four major steps of active listeningActive listening involves four major steps:

  1. prepare to listen
  2. attend to the speaker
  3. appreciate and acknowledge what was said
  4. conclude the conversation positively and definitively

You can also ask for more information without asking a question:

  • invite the speaker to continue: i.e., “Say more about that …”
  • use I-contact (start your sentences with “I”): e.g., “I’m concerned that you’re having trouble understanding, Joe…”

Each of these techniques is summarized in the next pages.
