Active Listening
Active listening involves four major steps:
- prepare to listen
- attend to the speaker
- appreciate and acknowledge what was said
- conclude the conversation positively and definitively
You can also ask for more information without asking a question:
- invite the speaker to continue: i.e., “Say more about that …”
- use I-contact (start your sentences with “I”): e.g., “I’m concerned that you’re having trouble understanding, Joe…”
Each of these techniques is summarized in the next pages.
