Assess Your Learning: Learning to Listen

The conversation between Kate and Sharon illustrates the many skills required for active listening. For most of us, the idea of being taught to listen in a special way seems a bit like closing the barn door after the horse has escaped!

But these techniques work. Practice them with your partner, spouse, child or significant other.

Remember, in order for your active listening to work, it should be focused on the speaker, not on you! Therefore, sometimes we have to resist telling things the way we see them.

Just as Kate resisted telling Sharon “I never lock my car either...,” she chose instead to listen and validate: “I can understand why you don’t always feel safe.”
