Introduction to Grievances
PEF provides extensive training on grievance procedures as part of its ongoing training for stewards and members.
Grievance procedures exist to provide due process in disciplinary matters, and to resolve disputes concerning the interpretation, application or violation of the contract.
There are two general types:
- Contract—where specific reference is made to the language of the contract
- Non-Contract—which include disputes where no contract language exists
The grievance procedure also seeks to protect all parties in a grievance situation from undue burdens, from unreasonable or frivolous accusations, and from retribution.
It is strongly recommended that you consult your Field Representative before filing a grievance, especially if you have not taken the "Grievance" training module and have had some experience with the grievance procedure.
